Edinburgh Shetland Fiddlers' Society

November 2, 2008 - 18:30
The meetings are not held every fortnight. Instead, they are held on the first and third Sundays of each month.

We are not a music class. We regard ourselves as a social group where all levels of musical skill are accepted. We only accept members in the age range 4 … 90 years old. Although our title includes the word "fiddlers", we are players of a rich variety of instruments. These include keyboard, recorders of various lengths, cello, guitar and concertina. We have had welcome visits from players of instruments that are more exotic.

On a typical night, we would arrive at about 7:30 in the evening and somebody, anybody, would start up a tune. Others would listen or join in, in unison or harmony, according to ability and whim. The one who started the melody might then continue with another tune to build up a set. There is no organisation of the music as such; it is the musical equivalent of an informal group conversation. The trick is to seize a gap between tunes and jump in with yours. The music is usually Shetland or Scottish, but we have members who sometimes like to play Swedish, American or Irish tunes. Everybody contributes £1 to help pay for the hire of the room.
